Irish PM Brian Cowen standing down as party leader

Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen has announced his resignation as leader of the ruling Fianna Fail party but will remain at the head of Government until the March general election.

After more than a week of political turmoil and a string of ministerial resignations, Mr Cowen said the election should be fought on policies not a leadership issue.

"I'm concerned that renewed internal criticism of Fianna Fail is deflecting attention from this important debate," Mr Cowen said.

"Therefore, taking everything into account after discussing the matter with my family I have taken, on my own counsel, the decision to step down."

Voters will go to the polls on March 11.

Mr Cowen said he made the dramatic decision to resign after sitting down with his family on Friday night. "I have been in touch with no senior party figures in relation to this decision," he said.

So should the Kalkara mayor Cohen (all Jews, the Cohens and Cowens) do since he did not have the guts to oppose the Palumbo shipyards like the rest of the Cottonera mayors. What about his relative Joe (Datatrack) Mizzi, is he still slamming Palumbo or did he throw in the towel per instructions from Chris (Ganga) Said?

With no disrespect I say that these Gonzi's most probably were never the kind of people to take up a leadership position. Mons. Gonzi became popular for the grievous situations of the 60's, while his nephew is becoming popular for the current ones.

Dr. Gonzi should consult with his wife Kate and the rest of his family as well. If they are sensible ppl they should recommend him to call it a day. He gave it his best shot and failed. Better realise this sooner rather then later.
