Gozitan on trial for attempted murder

An argument over an inheritance has landed a Gozitan man in the dock today, and is standing trial over the attempted murder of his brother-in-law in 2007.

Carmel Vella is accused of seriously injuring Carmel Xerri when hitting him with a crowbar on the head during an argument over an inheritance. Xerri, managed to recover from his injuries but still suffers the effects of his injuries.

During this morning’s sitting, jurors heard evidence from Police Sergeant Joseph Mizzi who explained that while on duty in April 2007, the accused had gone to the Xewkija police station to report that he had an argument with Xerri.

According to the officer, Xerri had told him that he had retaliated at Xerri who insulted him as he walked out of his mother-in-law’s house. An argument ensued, and according to the accused, Xerri went to his truck, got hold of a crowbar, ran to him and swung it at him.

The Police Sergeant went on to say that the accused stressed that when Xerri dropped the crowbar, he had picked it up and hit him with it on the head.

While Vella was arrested, Xerri was immediately hospitalised and wascritical for some time.

The case continues this afternoon.
