[WATCH] When tunnel meets tunnel
Watch the moment when Enemalta's new 1.8km tunnel breaks through an existing tunnel used for the distribution of high voltage electricity cables
Enemalta has just completed the excavation of a 1.8km tunnel linking the new Marsa distribution centre to the underground high voltage system supplying electricity from the power stations to the company's major distribution centres.
The five-metre-wide tunnel connects to an existing tunnel in Qormi, which forms part of the company's extensive underground network used for the distribution of 132 kilovolt cables.
The Marsa distribution centre is on the site of the former Marsa power station that has been decommissioned. It will help improve electrical capacity in the areas around the Grand Harbour.
Enemalta said more than 58,000 tonnes of limestone were excavated to dig the tunnel.
