St Paul's Bay residents, business owners petition against pedestrianisation project

Rallying against a pedestrianisation project that will eliminate 100 parking spaces in St Paul's Bay, residents and business owners are circulating a petition in effort to garner support.

Weekly newspaper Illum reports that in 2007, the St Paul's Bay council had applied for a permit to begin a project to beautify the area – know as ‘il-Menqa’. This project, currently pending approval by MEPA, proposes to narrow the square in front of St Paul’s Church and along il-Menqa to provide more space where pedestrians can walk freely.

Despite how residents and ship-owners welcome the project, which they maintain will rehabilitate the area, they argue that the current plan will create a large inconvenience to traffic flow, as well as drastically reduce available parking.

“We are not against renovation, actually we are very happy with this and we appreciate all the work that will be done,” one shop owner told Illum. “However, we also know that the way the streets will be remodelled will create parking problems. These would be on top of traffic congestion issues.”

The shop owner, who claimed to represent roughly 800 individuals, maintained that the project will mean the loss of over 100 parking spaces in the affected area.

Who is mayor of this locality anyway? Pawlu Bugeja or Censu's daughter? Besides, will Government tackle the problem head on and create local councils for Bugibba and Qawra that are, in actual fact, two additional, separate entities in all senses not least in financial interests?
