Mother charged with daughter's murder

55 year-old Tamara Kalinina was remanded in custody after being charged with the murder by suffocation of her 28 year-old daughter Yulia.

The Russian citizen pleaded not guilty to charges brought against her by the police, who are reported to have solved the case after forensic evidence led investigators to the mother.

Yulia Kalenina was discovered dead inside her apartment in Xemxija on Monday. She is belived to have been dead for at least 48 hours.

According to police sources, an autopsy confirmed that the young woman was suffocated with a pillow or cushion, and there was clear evidence that the murder followed a heated argument inside the apartment, as some glassware was found broken.

While police found no evidence of a break-in, police sought the mother and appealed for the public to assist in their investigations.

The mother Tamara Kalinina was interrogated yesterday evening and was later held under arrest until her arraignment.
