Europe must not ignore what is going on in Egypt – Foreign Affairs Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg augured that the changes being sought in Egypt are followed through order and with the participation of the largest number of political leaders.

In his intervention at the Council of Ministers yesterday, Borg said that Europe should not ignore what is happening in Egypt. “At the same time we should not take a paternalistic attitude towards Egypt and its people. The move toward democracy is not easy and Europe can help without imposing models which are similar to any one in particular,” Borg said.

The Council of Ministers urged the Egyptian authorities to begin an orderly transition through a broad policy-based government that would lead to a genuine process of democratic reform which is of substance and in full respect of rule of law and rights human, leading to free elections.
