€33.3m owed in refunds to 11,580 taxpayers

Government owes €33.3 million to 11,850 taxpayers - individuals and companies - in refunds from the Inland Revenue Department, the Finance Minister said in Parliament.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, told the House said that refunds were due to five persons in December 2008, while another 25 persons were owed their refunds in December 2009.

Refunds for 11,820 taxpayers were due last December. The Inland Revenue Department also has to pay €700,000 in interest.

He promised that payments will continue in the coming months.

I file my return on the phone and ten days later I get my refund......of course in Canada not in Malta.

What a shame €700,000 from our taxes to make good for incompetence if doing the job at the right time. Does the finance minister deserve a wage increase?
