Azzopardi accuses Labour of being opportunistic

But Cardona accuses Azzopardi of not consulting hawkers in moving them out to the Park and Ride

Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi has hit back at Labour spokesman Chris Cardona accusing of opportunism.  Flanked by his Press secretary Lino Mintoff, Dr Azzopardi who is the junior minister responsible for lands accused Cardona of opportunism and revealed that Labour has promised the hawkers a place in Valletta.  He said this in a press conference he held last night.

“Labour should state where the location in Valletta is,” he said.

Chris Cardona as PL spokesman criticised the decision to transfer the ‘monti’ to the park and ride out of Floriana without any consultation with the hawkers.

Hawkers are up in arms over the decision to transfer them out of Valletta and Valletta outlets especially cafeterias are irate that that monti will be taken away from Valletta.   Meaning less clients who traditionally would stroll into Valletta on a Sunday morning.

There will be no Monti this Sunday.

I think a long-term solution is to make them realise that theirs is not proper work and they should pack up - permanently! They are nothing but rubbish, most of them.

No, I don't believe that the monti hawkers' place is in Valletta. They dirty the place, they render the city shabbier than it is, they make the REAL business community in Valletta lose money because people refuse to pass by Merchants' Street - and they pay no money! Their wares are cheap, especially CDs and DVDs and other paraphernalia. No, their place certainly is not in Valletta and this administration is quite correct to force them out.

I also think that the hawkers respective place should be and remain Valletta. Why should this tradition be changed??? It is nonsense to suggest an another place!

The obvious solution for me is to allow the Sunday Hawkers to pitch their stalls in Valletta where the monti hawkers set up their stalls during the working week. This would also generate custom for the Valletta cafes and snack bars. Their might be reasons why the parliamentary secretariat eschewed this obvious solution but if so they should be transparent in explaining why they set aside the obvious solution. Driving the hawkers to the wilderness of the Park and ride scheme is however not a solution.
