Thomas Cremona arrives in Barbados, establishing new Atlantic rowing record

Together with his crew of Atlantic rowers, Thomas Cremona arrived in Barbados setting a new Atlantic rowing record.

The crew left Morocco on January 5 on their kayak Sara G and arrived at their destination at 12.18 today. Cremona, a cancer survivor, took part in the adventure to raise money for Puttinu Cares.

The Maltese rower said his Row4Cancer campaign was aimed at rasing awareness that there is life after cancer and one should never give up on believing in himself.

The crew, which also included Irish and British rowers, were greeted with applause amongst hugs and greetings by their relatives who were waiting on the quay. Upon arriving, Cremona wrapped himself in the Maltese flag marking the first Maltese national to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

A change of wind direction led to anxiety whether the rowers could make it in time to break the new record set only yesterday by a competing boat. Fortunately for the Sara G crew, they arrived well within the record time they needed to break with time to spare.

The competing boat, Hallin Marine, arrived yesterday at Barbados after leaving the Canary islands. Hallin Marine had arrived at 9.02pm (Malta time), whilst to break the record, Sara G had to arrive at 11pm (Malta time).

The Ocean Rowing Society International (ORSI) accepted to recognise the Hallin Marine record attempt on proportionately reduced distance. Hallin Marine had left from the Canary Islands.
