€3.4 million in EU funds for Natura 2000 sites
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority today unveiled €3.4 million in co-financed EU projects that will kick off the second phase in the development of Malta’s Natura 2000 sites.
Natura 2000 is the European network of specially protected areas and areas of scientific importance. Malta’s first phase was completed short after EU accession with 35 sites designated as conservation areas.
The second phase, which has a duration of three years, will ensure Mala fulfils its EU obligations by crating management plans that will allow people access while keeping the sites sustainable.
MEPA chairman Austin Walker described the project as a milestone in the protection of Malta’s rural environment. “We are moving a step further and giving these sites the protetcin they merir through the preparation f these management plans.”
Walker said the plans were not intended at suppressing recreational or any other economical activities within thee sites but promote and emphasise he need for the sustainable use of natural and rural resources with the full involvement of stakeholders.
Parliamentary secretary for tourism and the environment Mario de Marco said the project was the first time that an EU member state would ensure management planning coverage for all land-based Natura 2000 sites though a single initiative.
“Through the MEPA reform, we have put in place laws which do not permit the possibility for a landowner to try regularising illegal development carried out after May 2008 in an outside development zone or protected area… like pieces in a puzzle the measures must fit tightly together and dovetail with one another.”
