Experts to assess health hazard at Hexagon House

A meeting was held on Monday between the Director of Employment and Industrial Relations, MEPA and Unions, where it was agreed by all parties that experts are to be engaged to assess any health hazards before MEPA employees re-occupy the Hexagon House.

Following the latest incident last week at Hexagon House in Marsa, where at least 33 employees were certified with similar health symptoms, on the spot by doctors from the Health Centre, UHM and UPAP initiated industrial actions within the Environment Protection Department of MEPA on the health risks at Hexagon House.

This morning a meeting was held between UPAP, UHM, MEPA management and independent environmental experts to discuss the terms of reference for a Risk Assessment and air quality study at Hexagon House.

“The meeting  was  fruitful  and  it  was  acknowledged that there is an environmental concern  affecting  the  health  of  Hexagon House employees. Management promised to do their best to identify the source of the problem and tackle the issue at source,” UHM said in a statement.

The environmental experts from the University of Malta, commissioned by MEPA to carry out the studies, are to submit a method statement by this Friday. The studies will have to identify whether there are any risks, both in the short term as well as in the long term for the health of the employees that work in Hexagon House.
