Tonio Borg meets new Tunisian PM

Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg held official talks in Tunis, with the new Government.

The first meeting was held with Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi. Other meetings followed with Minister Nouri Jouini, Minister for Planning and International Cooperation, Radhouane Nouisser, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Professor Yadh Ben Achour, President of the High Commission for Political Reform.

Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg is one of the first European Ministers to visit Tunisia since the latest developments that took place in Tunisia.

During the two day visit in Tunisia, Minister Borg met Maltese businessmen who operate in Tunisia.

Following the assassination of Fr Marek Marius Rybinski yesterday morning in Manouba, Minister Borg visited the two Maltese Salesians who have been working with Fr Marek for the past years.

Tunisia is supporting the 5+5 meeting to be held in Malta later this year.

During the 5+5 meeting, heads of Government are to meet and discuss the future of the Mediterranean region.

The 5+5 is made up of Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Algiers, Tunisia, Morocco and Libya.

The 5+5 meetings offer a means of informal political dialogue between countries on both sides of the Mediterranean, although 2 of the countries involved – Portugal and Mauritania – have no Mediterranean coast.

Minister Borg was accompanied by Malta’s Ambassador to Tunis, Ms Vicky Ann Cremona.
