Busuttil urges EU for 'full revision' of Mediterranean policy
Addressing a European Parliament debate on the situation in Egypt, Maltese Euro MP Simon Busuttil said the European Union should follow a three-fold plan.
Following the uprising of the demonstrations in Egypt to oust former President Hosni Mubarak, the EP followed a discussion on the current situation in the country.
Busuttil said the EU should provide urgent assistance to Egypt as it will do to Tunisia, in order to help the country during the transition towards free and fair elections.
Busuttil went on to suggest the creation of a “detailed assistance package”, which he said would be something in the line of the Marshall Plan. “This is needed in the medium term to show that Europe supports democracy and that democracy pays,” Busuttil stressed.
The Maltese MEP also called for the EU’s Mediterranean policy to be revised: “[It] should be thoroughly revised to take a more visionary and ambitious approach to the dramatic events unfolding in the Arab world.”
Two weeks ago Busuttil took part in the European Parliamentary fact-finding mission which visited Tunisia, the country which triggered a domino effect in today's Arab world towards the conquest of democracy in their countries.
Busuttil also co-authored the Parliamentary Resolution on the situation in Egypt.
