JPO, Evarist Bartolo invoke SS guarantor to investigate phone tapping claims
MPs Evarist Bartolo and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, co-signatories on the divorce bill, have invoked Judge J.D. Camilleri to carry out investigations into their suspicion that their mobile phones may be tapped.
Camilleri is the head of the National Committee that governs the security services. Legally, Camilleri is the guarantor against any misuse of phone tapping.
Both MPs were reportedly referred to Camilleri by the Commissioner of Police John Rizzo, who while stressing that the allegation was of a “serious nature” the police had nothing to do with tapping systems, as this is in the hands of the security services.
MaltaToday is also informed that the MPs were also in contact with Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici.
The law that governs the use of phone tapping is governed by a National Committee that includes the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Home Affairs Minister.
The national committee is bound to be informed and issue due authorisation for phones to be tapped, which is limited to serious crime or national security.
In a statement issued last Thursday, the Yes For Divorce Movement, of which both MPs form part, said that both MPs were on the phone at 8:40pm of Wednesday evening following an activity held by the movement when they heard a whirring sound and the mobile connection was cut off.
“This gives rise to the suspicion that their conversation was being tapped,” the Movement said.
Both MPs and the movement consider this to be a potentially serious matter and a formal complaint has been made to the Commissioner of Police.
