People become more conscious of the amount of food that goes to waste when they start recycling, a pilot project to separate organic waste has shown.

Environment Minister Jose Herrera said awareness on food waste increased in those households that took part in the project ahead of a nationwide rollout of organic waste collection on 31 October.

Herrera described this as “a historic moment” for waste collection in the country.

Organic waste will have to start being thrown away in white bags that will be collected on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Herrera said that 40% of waste thrown away in black bags was organic. This amounted to 16,000 tonnes.

Enforcement will be carried out but for the first few months only warnings will be issued by means of stickers that will be stuck on inappropriate bags.
