AD 'appalled' at Maltese attitude to situation in Libya

Alternattiva Demokratika is “appalled” at the reported attitude of Minister Tonio Borg and the Labour Party spokesperson George Vella towards the situation in Libya.

According to reports both politicians agreed "It was important, they said, that Malta ensured that it had good relations with whoever governed Libya, thus safeguarding its own national interests".

Prof Arnold Cassola, AD Spokesperson on EU and International Affairs stated that is was unacceptable that the Maltese government and the opposition should agree on maintaining relations with Libyan government. “The Maltese politicians should speak out loudly and clearly that our country should have the best relations with the Libyan people and their legittimate representatives but absolutely no relations with a despot and tyrant, such as Gaddafi.

“Failure to denounce the inhumanity of this Libyan psychopath on the part of the PN and the PL is not going to appease Gaddafi, who has already massacred thousands of persons in Libya and is continuing to kill and torture tens of people every day, whilst the Maltese politicians shamefully fail to denounce his atrocities and call them by their name.”

AD Chairperson Michael Briguglio added "The only step to be taken quickly to be able to limit the atrocities of this dictator is the sending of UN mandated peace enforcement troops to Libya in order to stop the brutal Colonel from continuing with the carnage".

to Maltipur2 Clearly shows that you have as much backbone as our politicians. Safe hands indeed. God forbid we ever face a tragedy and be confronted with the same élan we are showing to the situation in Libya. These are human beings as well and we are praying to god to spare us from being involved!? We're simply interested in the goodies but none of the responsibilities. Now is the moment for us to stand up and be counted...and not to turn tail and flee. When this conflict is over and the Libyan people will regain their land, Malta will still be facing illegal immigration problems to say nothing about our economic relationships with the region. What kind of reciprocity can we expect for not involving ourselves?

AD, why don't you just shut up and allow the real people who can handle the situation do their job? No wonder you were never elected. God forbid that you do.

The interest and safety of the Maltese that are still in Libya comes first. Denouncing Gadaffi will only endanger the lives of our Maltese compatriots that are still stranded in Libya. AD`s reasoning in this matter only reaffirms why AD never took off as a political party.
