Nickie Vella de Fremeaux’s lawyer has filed official separation proceedings against her husband, the Nationalist Party leader Adrian Delia, saying the marriage has broken down irretrievably.

In a letter dated 21 December, her lawyer asked the registrar at the Family Court to authorise Vella de Fremeaux to proceed with the case for separation from Delia.

In October, the Nationalist Party leader had acknowledged that the relationship with his wife had been experiencing a “difficult period”.

The announcement was made in a short statement released by the Nationalist Party, in which Delia had asked for his family’s privacy to be respected, after blogger Manuel Delia reported that Vella de Fremeaux had sent her husband a legal letter asking for a separation.

Since then, Vella de Fremeaux informed her husband that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and wanted to proceed with court proceedings for separation. The couple have five children.
