Malta's car fleet grew by 78 vehicles per day in 2018
The stock of licensed vehicles stood at 385,326 last year, figures released by the National Statistics Office show
Malta's roads had to cater for 28,000 new vehicles last year, the largest yearly increase in car registrations since 2000.
According to the National Statistics Office, 28,497 newly licensed vehicles - new and second-hand - brought the stock of licensed vehicles to 385,326. These included cars, bikes, quad bikes, commercial vehicles and minibuses.
The figures out today show that last year, the number of newly licensed motor vehicles on the road increased by an average of 78 per day.
Passenger cars made up the bulk of licenced vehicles (77.9%) followed by commercial vehicles (13.6%) and motorcycles (7.4%).
Electric and hybrid vehicles accounted to just 0.6% of the entire stock, with a total of 2,367.
The number of petrol-powered engines amounted to 231,508, 60% of the total, while the number of diesel-powered vehicles amounted to 149,979.
