Tonio Borg in meetings with Italy's foreign ministry
Foreign Minister Tonio Borg is currently attending meetings at Italy’s Foreign Ministry to discuss the ongoing crisis in Libya and the preparations for the 5+5 meeting.
Borg first met with the Mediterranean Under-Secretary Stefania Craxia, where they discussed Libya, the sanctions which are being discussed at the European Level and the Ministerial meeting of the 5+5 meeting which is to take place in Naples.
The two also discussed the 5+5 summit of the leaders of governments which is scheduled to take place in Malta next June.
Without revealing much detail, the Ministry said both parties came to the agreement that preparations for both meetings should go on as planned.
On Libya, Borg and Caxi agreed sanctions should not affect or hurt its citizens.
Borg reiterated Malta’s position that it will continue on its humanitarian mission but it will not serve as a military base in respect to the country's principle of neutrality.
Borg is also scheduled to meet with Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini before they attend an emergency meeting of the EU’s Council of Foreign Ministers which is to take place later on this week.
The Ministry also informed that all Maltese who wanted to come back have been evacuated from Libya, whilst two others are on their way to Malta.
