AD supports UN mandate for no-fly zone

Alternattiva Demokratika is supporting the requests made by Mahmud Gebril and Ali al-Essawi, members of the Libyan opposition provisional national council.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson on EU and International Affairs, stated: "Europe cannot watch impotently as innocent civilians are being massacred by the Gaddafi air force and armed forces. We therefore urge the Maltese government to lobby other governments to ensure that a 'no fly zone' targeting the Libyan Air Force is put into place as soon as possible by the United Nations."

Cassola said the EU should meet the demands of the Libyan opposition for economic, humanitarian and medical aid as well as military assistance for the Libyan opposition, without any direct military intervention by foreign countries.

Michael Briguglio, Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson, added: "In view of the civil war that is going on on our doorsteps, the air exclusion zone for Libyan military planes becomes a must. The EU Leaders' Summit today must take quick decisions to stop Gaddafi from decimating his people."

This is a very coherent and commendable stand by AD.
