Libya | Government, Opposition must ‘wake up and push for no-fly zone' - AD
Alternattiva Demokratika, the Green Party, has once again appealed to the Maltese government to push for an immediate air exclusion no-fly zone in Libya.
In a statement, AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs Arnold Cassola called on government and the opposition to stop appeasing the Gaddafi regime and take action.
“What is the civilised world waiting for to declare an air exclusion, no-fly zone in Libya?,” Cassola asked, whilst reminding that Gaddafi’s regime is moving closer to Benghazi, fighting against the poorly-armed opposition.
“Is the international community waiting for genocide on its conscience before taking action? Maltese Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, Maltese Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat and Maltese EU commissioner John Dalli should wake up and smell the coffee... and quickly,” he stated. “They cannot go on trying to appease the Gaddafi brutal regime for some unknown (sic!) reason.”
Cassola also said that any further silence on their part could lead to the decimation of thousands of other innocent Libyans.
AD Chairperson Michael Briguglio said Maltese Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi should take the lead in pushing the international community to take action to prevent a genocide.
“Following the assent of the Arab League, it is now the turn of the UN Security Council and the European Union to act swiftly on the issue of the no-fly zone,” he said.
