GWU calls for action on better relations between trade unions

The General Workers Union has called for action to be taken by the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions to improve relations between trade unions.

The GWU expressed satisfaction at the comments made by CMTU president, William Portelli stating that CMTU is not opposed to Forum joining either Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) or European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

GWU put forward three proposals at a press conference yesterday for the initiation of “serious discussions” to improve relations between the trade unions and called on CMTU to accept Forum as members of both MCESD and ETUC.

The GWU expects Portelli to declare that no opposition is to be made at the ETUC Executive Committee meeting scheduled for 28 April and that insisting for a ballot on the issue will be stopped. GWU sees this as “an opportunity for Portelli to stand by his own words as actions speak louder than words.”

The GWU denied that it rejected the CMTU memorandum of understanding stating that all unions, including CMTU should be free to present their own proposals without any preconditions.
