Local levels of Japanese radiation drop

Analysis by the Public Health Lab shows that the level of radiation released by the heavily-damaged Japanese Fukushimaplant are steadily decreasing.

Weekly newspaper Illum reports previous statements announcing the discovery of low levels of iodine and caesium radionuclides in Malta.

The discovery coincided with similar discoveries around Europe, at the same time of the Japanese Fukushima nuclear power plant leak. Iodine-131, Caesium-134 and Caesium-137 are chemical traces that indicate potential radioactive contamination.

“According to the latest results sent by the public health lab, the air samples taken indicate that the levels of these chemicals is dropping,” a spokesperson for the Health Ministry said

“The samples which were sent and analysed were gathered on 15 April,” the spokesperson added.

The report adds that the spokesperson also said that the presence of these chemicals has no harmful or threatening effect on peoples’ health.
