GreenPak gives away one million free recycling bags

GreenPak has distributed one million green recycling bags to a number of households withing the Local Councils that are working with GreenPak to promote "Recycling on Tuesday"

A continuous education campaign has been underway for the last 14 months raising awareness about the importance of recycling and the separation of waste in various localities served by GreenPak. Representatives from GreenPak have been visiting various households, giving out free rolls of green bags together with an educational leaflet whilst answering any queries by the residents.

Mario Schembri, CEO of GreenPak said, “GreenPak has always believed that the key to success in increasing recycling participation is through education as this creates awareness and encourages public participation. Through our investment in this education campaign across Malta and Gozo, we are aiming to increase Malta’s overall recycling tonnage rates while boosting recycling participation rates so that the Local Councils working with GreenPak reduce their costs related to waste recovery and therefore redirect more funds into the up keep of their respective locality.”

Residents in the 27 localities serviced by GreenPak have been rewarded for their effort and commitment to recycling. GreenPak launched a Reward-Reuse-Recycle (3R) campaign which has seen as increase in recycling participation.

Since November 2010, GreenPak representatives have been giving out 500 hampers with free gifts to unsuspecting residents who have, through the use of the recycling bag door-to-door collections or by disposing their separated waste in GreenPak’s recycling banks, helped make a difference in their locality.

Each green-cloth hamper, doubles up as a carrier bag and included a wide selection of consumer products ranging from biscuits, toiletries, dairy products and various other groceries. GreenPak is supported by some 370 companies with Malta Dairy Products, V.J. Salomone Marketing, Brincs Biscuits, Beautimport, Golden Harvest, Nectar, Drop Chemicals, Kemimport, McDonalds, Vivian Corporation, Tal-Qroqq Confectionery, International Merchants and Von Brockdorff Imports donating products towards this initiative. More details available on www.greenpak.com.mt

Wow people do enjoy having things for free, but frebies get us nowhere unless more vigilance is enforced especially near recycling sites. I have just witnessed the ignorance of certain people. The truck came to empty the blue recyclinhg recepient, guess what? It was filled with building material and engine oil. Why hassle with rinsing plastic bottles. The site is always littered and people leave anything around from chandeleirs to their daily rubbish. Unfortunately the Mosta Local Council cannot tackle the problem and law abiding citizens have to endure the horrible sites placed on our doorstep. .

A million green bags to a "number of households" means a few households must have a lot of bags. Personally, I haven't even seen one of these bags yet!

Can we have details of the localities where the hampers were distributed because as far as I know all localities are participating in the scheme?
