Asthma rehab department to be opened at MDH

An asthma rehab department is to be opened within the physiotherapy department of Mater Dei Hospital to help prevent asthma attacks and to treat patients suffering attacks.

Dr Peter Micallef, Assistant within the Ministry of Health opened an event to commemorate World Asthma day. He said that education is the key to ensuring asthma sufferers lead a normal life, using the correct medications to prevent attacks while participating in normal day-to-day activities.

“With the correct medication and professional care asthma attacks can be controlled so that sufferers can lead normal life, even taking part in sporting activities.”

Asthma is an allergic condition that causes inflammation of the lungs. It is present in large numbers, particularly in children. Though some children outgrow the condition by the time they reach puberty, for some the condition causes loss of lung function and becomes an established condition throughout adulthood.

Asthma sufferer Marika Mizzi also addressed the event talking about her experience as a chronic asthma sufferer. She has not let the condition affect her life and leads a normal life, being very active in sports from volleyball to football. She participated in Life Cycle and has even been mountain climbing at very high altitudes. She advocates that with the right precautions an asthma sufferer can do the same things a non-sufferer can do.
