FORUM to become a member of ETUC
The General Workers Union (GWU) welcomes the decision taken by the European Confederation of Trade Unions (ETUC) today in Brussels.
Secretary General John Monks proposed FORUM be admitted as an observer member of ETUC as of today, becoming a full member by the coming October, a proposal that was unanimously accepted by the executive committee. President of FORUM, John Bencini was called to the meeting at that time.
The meeting was made possible following earlier meetings during which Seceratry General of GWU, Tony Zarb, Michael Parnis, Deputy Secretary General and representative of CMTU and later on with FORUM and officials of ETUC.
In his proposal, Monks said that between now and October the CMTU and FORUM have do everything possible to work together under the guidance of Prof Edward Zammit.
GWU said that it has always been in favour of the Unions working together and that the Maltese workers have more to gain if all the unions involved work as a team.
The GWU said it “believes seriously in the merger and will continue to find common ground where representatives of Maltese workers can come together to discuss topics of interest to workers.”
