UĦM marks Workers' Day, recalls Malta's accession to the EU

What’s the use of a growing economy if workers, youths, pensioners and families are not taking advantage of economic growth? UĦM secretary-general Gejtu Vella asks.

Marking Workers’ Day, Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin (UĦM) secretary-general Gejtu Vella said trade unionism is is an effective way to bring about social change: “Trade unionism is solidarity put into practice.”

Vella said UĦM’s work is built on different levels: on a personal level where workers are given advice, help and direction; on a collective level through negotiations of collective agreements; on a national level through effective participation in MCESD, MEUSAC; and on an international level through full participation in international fora.

Vella said that in the coming October, during its Annual General Meeting, UĦM plans to focus on those sectors which need attention in order to benefit the quality of life.

“Social Vision 2015 should be a reflection of what is required in the social sector. What’s the use of a growing economy if workers, youths, pensioners and families are not taking advantage of economic growth?” he said.

Vella added UĦM will be focusing on how education, health, family, the digital revolution, democratic institutions and quality of life can be of greater help to the worker.

In his speech, Vella also remembered the seventh anniversary of Malta’s accession to the European Union: “Today, everyone acknowledges it was a natural step through which our country is attracting more investment with new opportunities for work.”

“With its membership, Malta has also acquired insurance on several important sectors, including political, economic, social and environmental ones,” he added.

UHM should most of all recall Worker's Day....at least if it still calls itself a "workers" Union!! I have my doubts, this Union continues to watch on as worker's rightskeep deteriorating under Gonzipn and has become Gonzi's lap dog , sustainer and samson!
