Japanese majority opposes restart of nuclear reactors
Almost 70% of the Japanese oppose the restart of nuclear reactors halted for maintenance work, a survey showed.
The high percentage result of the survey comes despite the Japanese well knowing that keeping the nuclear reactors shut could mean power blackouts throughout the summer and higher electricity bills.
The survey, conducted by the Nikkei business daily, showed that 47% want to also cut down the number of nuclear plants.
The negative response was the result of the growing public fears about nuclear power following the crisis at Tokyo’s Fukushima plant. Three months later, workers are still struggling to control radiation leaks.
35 of Japan’s 54 commercial reactors are currently shut, including the six at Fukushima. Before the crisis, nuclear power provided about 30% of Japan’s electricity.
