6.5 quake hits Northern Japan, no tsunami warning issued

As a strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan, geologists said there has been no major damage and no danger of a tsunami occurring.

The quake struck early in the night off the Pacific coast of the Miyage prefecture, around the same area where the March 11 earthquake and tsunami had hit.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the magnitude was estimated at 6.5.

Tokyo Electric Power said the quake did not cause fresh damage to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant., whilst there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries elsewhere.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was “no destructive widespread tsunami threat” although a local tsunami could result from a quake of such size. The Tohoku Shinkansen train services were halted, but resumed shortly afterwards.
