AD calls for legally-binding UN resolution on Syrian crackdown
The UN’s declaration on Syria "is simply not enough,” says Alternattiva Demokratika, calling for a legally binding resolution.
AD spokesperson on EU and International Affairs Prof. Arnold Cassola said the situation in Syria “has become intolerable, with tens of people being killed every day and the city of Hama being targeted in particular.”
He added that human rights’ activists have stated that over 2000 people have already been butchered in Syria by the Assad regime in the ongoing violence.
“The International community cannot keep quiet with such events going on and a UN declaration is simply not enough,” Cassola said, dismissing a UN statement condemning the violence issued earlier that day.
He called for swift action by the UN Security Council and added that the EU should follow suit with “a legally binding resolution.”
Cassola also called on the Maltese government “to pursue all avenues to ensure that the killing by the Assad regime stops.”
AD Chairperson Michael Briguglio said that AD supports the democratic forces of opposition in Syria “and in other countries characterised by brutal dictatorships.”The European Union should not give its support to such Governments," he said.
