Pope warns against 'false gods'

Pope Benedict XVI warned against "false gods" as he celebrated mass in Madrid's cathedral, on a final weekend of dazzling Catholic festivities that have sparked angry protests.

Tens of thousands of young pilgrims, many waving national flags and wearing orange floppy hats made for the August 16-21 World Youth Day celebrations, cheered his arrival at Madrid's Almudena Cathedral.

Wearing a white cassock, scarlet cape and white skullcap, and with a gold pectoral cross hanging from his neck, the 84-year-old pontiff descended from the popemobile.

The leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics sprinkled holy water at the entrance and donned a white, gold-embroidered mitre before walking down the aisle of the 19th century cathedral to celebrate mass for 6,000 young people preparing to join the priesthood.

"Do not be intimidated by surroundings that would exclude God and in which power, wealth and pleasure are frequently the main criteria ruling people's lives," the pope warned the seminarians.

"You may be shunned along with others who propose higher goals or who unmask the false gods before whom many now bow down."

The pope drew a thunderous applause as he announced he will bestow an extremely rare honour on a Spanish saint, Saint John of Avila, by proclaiming him a doctor of the Church.

Only 33 doctors of the Church -- reserved for figures of eminent doctrine and remarkable holiness -- have been proclaimed since 1295, and the last was in 1997.

Earlier in the morning, the pope heard confession from four young pilgrims -- two women and two men -- in one of 200 temporary confessionals set up in Madrid's city-centre Retiro park.

He will hold a prayer vigil in the evening at an airbase southwest of the capital, where the pilgrims will spend the night under the stars on an esplanade the size of 48 football pitches.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have poured into the Cuatro Vientos base's grounds, which resembled a massive rock festival.

The faithful sprawled across the ground with backpacks, sleeping bags, many waving national flags. They propped up beach parasols and umbrellas to try to fend off the punishing August sun.

The pope celebrates mass there on Sunday morning at a white altar almost 200 metres (660 feet) long in front of a vast wave-shaped stage and under a giant parasol "tree", made of interwoven golden rods.

The sheer scale of the celebrations in Madrid has sparked angry demonstrations, however, over the expense at a time of economic hardship, with unemployment for under-25s running at more than 45 percent.

Thousands of protesters marched in central Madrid late Friday to protest the expense and to decry police crackdowns on earlier demonstrations.

"This is not the pope youth!" and "No to police violence!", the crowd chanted, waving their hands in the air.

Scores of police prevented the activists from marching into the city's central Puerta del Sol square, where clashes took place on both Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Baton-wielding anti-riot police in Madrid late Thursday dispersed about 150 protesters from the square. On Wednesday 11 people were reported lightly injured when police broke up a protest.

Protesters -- including some priests -- are fuming over the official €50.5 million price tag, excluding the cost of police and security, of the Catholic youth celebrations.

But organisers of the festivities say most of the cost will be covered by a registration fee from the pilgrims, and the celebration will be a massive tourist boost for Spain.

Monique, The church doesn't get to know. The excommunication is automatic, and is the result of one's decision to abort, or to participate in abortion. No formal pronouncement is necessary. Of course if the individual then decides to continue receiving the Sacraments as if nothing has happened then it is his/her business, and he/she is answerable to god for his/her actions.

False gods? They are ALL fakes. All religions are nothing more than big business to stupify the gullible. Gods were always, and always will be, invented by man, for the benefit of the few and the manipulation of the many.

Still i haven't got a proper answer regarding my previous question: How does the church know about who had an abortion ?

Monique, Within Catholic belief, the adoration of anyone or anything other than God amounts to a very serious sin, that is to say idolatry. Do not confuse veneration - the proper respect due to saints - with adoration, as many do. Moreover, excesses of the type we witness (of which there are aplenty in relation to states and statues) are also condemned by the Catholic Church. That many Catholics choose to ignore Church teachings is yet another a reflection of man's sinful nature. Abortion carry automatic excommunication, i.e.e there does not need to be a formal pronouncement or even a formal decision by the Church on specific cases. The decision to abort means one has chosen to cut oneself off from the church community. Proper confession (of which at least imperfect contrition is an indispensable elemnt) will bring one back into Communion with the rest of the Church.

@Bagħal, So all the countless catholics adoring a Madonna statue or variable Saints at every festa are nothing else than a bizarre hallucination. The adoration lets them even scratch their last money out of their pockets to cover the biċċa ġebel in gold. And can someone please enlighten me how the church got to know about the terminated pregnancies ? And don't try to make me believe that the women went to confess it, thanks.

The anti catholic movement in malta has now joined our brothers and issters in Euope and think that by speaking against the church are they doing something speciial. What some people are confusing is that the sins of some of the priests make all church members bad. WEll, grow up all you ignorant people. People as well as the church do make mistakes, but who forgives more than our church. If you compliainers don't like it, too bad, you can join something else and take a hike, but your anti church rantings is not justified and you are offending the people who are believers. Stop being so judgmental.

@Monique, A true Catholic does not pray to and adore statues, despite the uninformed and bizarre perception to the contrary. The women who aborted and are being encouraged to go to confession are not being welcomed in order to make up for those who have decided not to practice their faith any longer. The Church is made up of sinners - and indeed was made for sinners. It is their natural home.

Unfortunately it appears that very few met Christ. Whatever religion one follow the God is the absolue one that gives the real peace. For those that do not have God in their life; you do not know what are you missing.

@Jason WHAT IS THE QUESTION PRAY? I SEE NONE HERE. RIDICULE IN THIS CASE IS JUSTIFIED CONSIDERING THE OLD HAGS NERVE. WHO IS THE TRUE GOD NOW ANYWAY? HAVE YOU NOT HEAR OF ECUMENISM? PLUS WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS REPRESENTING. IF HE REPRESENTS CHRIST; WHICH I AM MORE THAN SURE HE DOES NOT, THEN I REJECT CHRIST AND HIS GOD TOO. BUT HE IS A DESPERATE MAN AT THE HEAD OF AN EVEN MORE DESPERATE INSTITUTION. SO TRYING TO MAKE SENSE IS FUTILE, NAY LAUGHABLE. WHAT KNOWLEDGE DO YOU POSSESS THAT US LESSER IGNORANT MORTALS DON'T PRAY BE CHRISTLIKE AND SHARE...

Cynicism is to preach against false gods but adoring and praying to statues. Cynicism is to excommunicate women who had an abortion..only to welcome them back to make up for another few lost sheep

Resorting to ridicule and cynicism does not help to answer questions. Actually ridicule is a way of hiding one's lack of knowledge.

..and who exactly are the "false" gods ? Allah, Jahwe, Buddha, Lady Gaga or Ronhaldino ?? BTW...women who had an abortion and were excommunicated from the catholic church ( how did the church know about the terminations, i ask) were invited to confess in one of the temporary set ups, pray a hundred rosaries and whoops..they joined the club again. The church must be in a true crisis considering they are taking back the biggest "sinners"
avatar
Presumably - they are all false with the exception of his own franchise? Sounds like a business accusing others of selling fakes. In the meantime, citizens are chased by baton wielding policeman so he come over an warn of fake gods - priceless!
avatar
Malta abounds with false Gods. All the statues and blessings, and how about those two clowns, one for each island just in case, dressed in their pompom hats strutting with the politicans at every occasion?? Yep you got it right Benedict all false Gods...they have banished the true God in their pomposity ceremonies and false smiles.

This guy should have become a stand-up commedian. It's funny for him to warn us against "false gods", seeing that he actually claims to be representing one.

LIKE WHO? ONES WHO WEAR RED PRADA SHOES AND GUCCI SUNGLASSES. OH PLEASE!! ANOTHER NUTTER LIKE ANGELIK BUT WITH BETTER TASTE FOR BEING A FAG LIKE ME. THOUGH I WOULD NOT BE SEEN DEAD IN RED SHOES PRADA OR NOT, GOR FEAR OF BEING CALLED DOROTHY FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ. WHAT GOD IS FALSE THAN THE ONE HE REPRESENTS? WHICH I AM SURE IS NOT CHRIST. NO WAY WILL I EVER BELIEVE THAT!!

Quote: Pope Benedict XVI warned against "false gods" . How about false religions? What prove is there that his God is true? . If the people of the worrld put religion aside, there would be peace!
