India's PM calls for meeting on corruption
India’s government is urging all political parties to reach consensus on drafting an anti-corruption legislation as an activist leading anti-graft protests enters second week of hunger strike.
Anna Hazare, the human rights activist, went on hunger strike last week and has since nearly lost six kgs. Hazare is calling for a legislation to create an anti-corruption agency.
Hazare’s strike has attracted the attention of middle class citizens and thousands of protesters went out on the streets against Prime Minister’s Manmohan Singh’s government. News agencies also report that open toilets and spilling waste were starting to cause outbreaks of food poisoning and illnesses.
Singh has now called an all-party meeting to discuss details of setting up an anti-corruption agency.
India is currently faced by fast-growing protests against a system which requires bribes for everything from driver’s licenses to birth certificates and a series of graft scandals that have touched top politicians and businessmen.
