‘Credible’ terror attack threat on 9/11 anniversary

As today America commemorates the 10th anniversary from the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, the country is also on maximum security alert amid “credible” reports that al Qaeda is planning to blow up bridges or tunnels in New York with a car bomb.

Sky News reports that US President Barack Obama has ordered counter-terrorism forces to “redouble” efforts after a terror threat emerged last night. According to the news agency, the Homeland Security Department said the threat is “credible and specific”, but unconfirmed.

Police are also reportedly hunting for three people known to have recently entered the country. Officials were reported as saying that the threat cam in a single piece of information, very specific, and came at a time of high alert at the extent that it could not be ignored.

Meanwhile, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said police were deploying additional resources around the city and advised New Yorkers to go about their business as usual.

“For 10 years we have not allowed terrorists to intimidate us, we have lived our lives without fear and we will continue to do so,” he said.

“So go about your business as you normally would, just be vigilant.”
