Three dead in Guatemala earthquake

Four earthquakes reaching up to 5.8 magnitude hit the south of Guatemala, killing three, damaging homes and triggering landslides.

Fourth earthquakes within two and a half hours hit southern Guatemala, with officials reporting that so far three people have been killed.

One woman died when her house collapsed, whilst two others died after their cars were buried in a landslide on the highway.

Media reports that President Alvaro Colom has called for calm and has reassured his citizens that “there is no reason to think there will be anything bigger.” At a news conference, he said all rescue forces and government agencies had been activated to deal with the aftermath.

According to the Guardian, 400 people had to evacuate the region around Santa Rosa. Officials said electricity and telephone services have been cut.
