Major progress for Libya’s interim government forces

Sirte, one of last strongholds of Muammar Gaddafi’s, attacked by Libya’s National Transition Council (NTC) troops and close to being won.

After months of attempts, the NTC soldiers are making progress as swift advances pushed towards the city centre outpacing the remainder of pro-Gaddafi bombarding defences.

NAto air strikes, providing major assistance in the conflict, are part of the UN-mandated mission to protect civilians.

Bani Walid is the last remaining stronghold for pro-Gaddafi forces and is resisting to NTC attacks.

Other explosions in Tripoli, heard on Saturday afternoon, were reported to have been caused by an accident at a military storage facility.

Libya’s interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril addressed the General Assembly and said, “A new democratic Libya is coming to life”.

Jibril requested all Libyan assets to be unlocked to “assure reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country”.
