EPP Labour Ministers gather in Paris ahead of G20 meeting

European People's Party (EPP) and Labour and Employment Ministers met this morning in Paris ahead the G20 meeting, to discuss the economic crisis and the measures needed to boost growth and job creation.

The EPP meeting was chaired by Ministers Xavier Bertrand (France) and Maurizio Sacconi (Italy). It is the first time that EPP Ministers meet ahead of the G20.

The Ministers reviewed the G20 agenda and agreed on the need for a common approach to stimulate job creation, in view of the continuing global economic crisis. New employment incentives for the youth was an important highlight of the discussion.

EPP President Wilfried Martens and EPP Secretary GeneralAntonio López-Istúriz also participated in today’s meeting:

"For the EPP and our political family, work is a value. We need to foster this value and to enhance the social dimension on an international scale," Martens said.

"But we need more coordination in order to harmonize labour and social policy reforms around the globe and to promote growth enhancing measures in the global social agenda. The EPP wants a global response to this global crisis.”

Secretary General López-Istúriz underlined that unemployment is the worst consequence of the current economic crisis and the priority for the EPP is to find the right policies to reverse the situation.

“Coordination with like-minded leaders around the world is becoming increasingly important,” he said.
