Opposition groups in Syria form National Council

The main Opposition groups in Syria have joined forces and united in a National Council, in a bid to oust Syrian leader Bashal al-Assad.

The main groups fighting for the removal of the Bashar al Assad regime yesterday formed the National Council and called on the international community to take action and protect the Syrian people.

However, it also rejected foreign intervention, saying that it would compromise Syrian sovereignty.

“Any form of intervention must happen with the agreement of the National Council, which has been formed today. In this case, we will be cooperating with the international forces. We will not accept any intervention outside the framework,” said Council member Burhan Ghalioun.

France has already recognised the National Council, which is also bringing together opposition groups within Syria.

Activists say between 15 and 20 civilians are dying every day now.
