Syria security forces open fire on funeral

Security forces in Syria fired at mourners attend the funeral of a prominent Syrian Kurdish opposition figure. Several have been killed, activists say.

Syrian security forces opened fire on some fifty thousand mourners who were attending the funeral of Mishaal al-Tammo in Qamishli. The Kurd was expected to play a leading role in the Syrian National Council. Bringing together anti-government groups, the Council was formed last week.

Opposition forces are blaming President Bahsar Assad’s forces of killing al-Tammo last Friday, when masked gunmen in the city gunned him down.

Activists say that at least five people were killed during the funeral. A mourner told the Associated Press that funeral was turning into a massive protest against Assad’s rule.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network said that It said clashes took place between security forces and protesters who tried to tear down a statue of Hafez Assad, the authoritarian leader and late father of Syria's current president.
