Egyptian protesters in their thousands gathered in Tahrir Square after controversial constitutional changes were proposed by the military council.

Parliamentary elections are due to take place this month and many Egyptians fear that the military is trying establish its power after ruling Egypt since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in February.

Protesters in Cairo as well as others in Alexandria, Egypt’s second city, are demanding the proposals for constitutional change to be withdrawn by the military.

These proposals include the declaration of the military as the guardian of ‘constitutional legitimacy’ which could suggest that the country’s armed forces would have the final word on major policies even after a new president is elected.

Egyptians also feel that despite the removal of Mubarak as president, life was not improving and frustration is increasing.
