At least 676 people were injured after Egyptian riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets in Cairo’s Tahrir Square which set off clashes.

Fighting back, hundreds of protesters threw stones and set fire to an armoured police vehicle.

New unrest is feared in light of parliamentary elections due to take place in nine days.

The public has been angered at the slow pace being taken to implement reforms and attempts by ruling generals in Egypt to retain power over a future civilian government.

Clashes were witnessed when a small tent camp commemorating the hundreds of killed protesters was dismantled by riot police. 200 peaceful demonstrators who had camped overnight in the square were also attacked.
