Cairo’s Tahrir Square remains occupied by protesters against Egypt’s military rulers for the third consecutive day.

At least 13 people have been killed over the weekend as a result of major assaults launched by security forces on Sunday in an attempt to clear the square.

Protesters, however, returned within the hour. This is the longest continuous protest since February when President Hosni Mubarak was driven out of office.

Elections are expected to start next week but demonstrators fear that Egypt’s governing Supreme Council of Armed Forces will not release their grip on power.

Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi leads the council which is in charge of seeing the country’s smooth transition to democracy following three decades of Mubarak’s autocratic rule.
