Northern Japan was struck by two strong earthquakes today but no damage has been reported and tsunami warnings were not released.

The second quake measured a magnitude of 6.1 struck south of the northern island of Hokkaido according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

The agency did not release any tsunami warning for the quake which hit around 750 kilometres northeast of Tokyo and 30 kilometres below the sea surface.

The first  quake of 6.0 magnitude was felt in Tokyo as it struck close to the nuclear power plant previously damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2001.

Both earthquakes were not reported to have damaged any nuclear plants in the region.

About 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur on an arc of earthquake and volcanic zone stretching around the Pacific rim and is known as the “Ring of Fire”. Japan lies on this arc.
