Around 250,000 public sector workers in Scotland joined England in marking the public sector strike which is taking place across the UK.

The industrial action resulted in most schools and postponement of NHS appointments in their thousands.

As with England, Scotland’s public sector workers went on strike to protest government plans to increase the contribution amounts to be paid into their pensions.

Around 17,000 people took to the streets in Glasgow and Edinburgh in protest.

The British government stated that reforms were planned as the current pension system was not sustainable and risks going broke.

If plans to increase pension contributions do go through, unions across the UK warned the government that further industrial action could happen.
