Owner Yumiko Shinohara said Pusuke, a Shiba mix, died on Monday at her home in Sakura, after suddenly falling ill and refusing to eat.

Pusuke's life span would have been the equivalent of about 125 human years.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the dog was born 1 April 1985 and was recognised as the world's oldest living dog in December 2010.

The Guinness record for canine longevity is held by Bluey who lived for 29 years in Australia. The record stands since 1939.
