Tunisia drops warrant against Suha Arafat
A Tunisian court has lifted an arrest warrant summoning Suha Arafat, the widow of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, over a corruption case concerning the building of the International Carthage School in suburban Tunis in 2007, the official press agency TAP reported this morning.
The building of the school, which the TAP report said was set up illegally to serve special interests, also involved Leila Ben Ali, wife of the ousted Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
No reason was given for the lifting of the warrant.
Following the issuing of the arrest warrant on Nov. 1 this year, Suha Arafat has issued a statement claiming her innocence.
In August of 2007, Ben Ali decided to strip Suha Arafat of her Tunisian nationality which she had been granted in 2006. Since then, she left Tunisia for Malta where she now lives in.
