The Arab League proposal was signed by Syria in an attempt to end the conflict between government forces and protesters.

The agreement was announced by Foreign Minister Walid Moallem following reports from an opposition group of nearly 50 deaths in one day and days after the Cairo-based group of Arab nations said it could ask the United Nations Security Council to intervene.

Moallem said that a political solution was wanted because he did not want the killings to continue but it was Syria’s decision to sign the agreement.

Most of the 50 deaths reported happened in the southern city of Daraa and in Homs, just north of the Lebanese border and included a woman and two children.

More than 5,000 people have been estimated to have died since the revolution against the Syrian government according to the UN.
