Arrest warrant issued for Sunni Muslim VP in Iraq
Iraqi authorities issue arrest warrant for Sunni Muslim Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi after confessions link him to shootings of government officials.
An arrest warrant for Sunni Muslim Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi was issued by Iraqi authorities for suspected ties to assassinations and bombings.
The decision comes after the U.S. troop withdrawal on Sunday and risks bringing down the already delicate power-sharing deal between Shi’ite, Sunni and Kurdish blocs to settle tensions after almost bringing the country on the brink of civil war.
The vice president was linked to killings and attacks on Iraqi government and security officials through confessions by suspects identified to be Hashemi’s bodyguards.
The taped confessions showed men claiming to be members of Hashemi’s security detail who had been paid by his office, and sometimes up to €3,000 by Hashemi himself to carry out killings.
Killings were described in detail and included bombs being planted on the side of the road and drive-by shootings of security and government officials.
