Arab League observers expected in Syria today
Arab League observers to monitor whether Syria’s president is complying with an agreement to end the crackdown on protesters calling to the end of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
As opposition reports reveal an increase in attacks by government forces in the recent weeks, observers from the Arab League are expected to arrive in Syria today to seek an end to this conflict.
About 50 observers from the Arab League will be among the first to arrive, and more monitors are expected to follow as needed, said an Arab League official. The number of observers could total almost 100, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details to the media.
The unrest in Syria was sparked by the Arab Spring as protesters were emboldened by the success of democracy movements in Tunisia and Egypt.
