Kim Jong-un announced North Korea’s supreme military commander
The youngest son of the late Kim Jong-il has been appointed supreme commander of North Korea’s 1.2 million strong forces.
Kim Jong-il’s youngest son and anointed successor, Kim Jong-un, was announced as supreme commander of North Korea’s 1.2 million-strong military.
The announcement came just two days after the official mourning period for Jong-il ended during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the ruling Worker’s Party.
According to Jong-il’s will, made on 8 October 2011, Kim Jong-un was to assume the supreme commandership of the Korean People’s Army.
Taking control of one of the world’s most powerful armed forces also indicated that the strengthening of Jong-un’s power could be made much faster than expected. Although some have said that it would take months to take on the full array of titles held by his father.
