A bluefin tuna was caught off the north eastern coast of Japan and cost a record 56.49 million yen which amounts to approximately €570,000.

The tuna weighed in at 269 kilograms and the price beat last year’s record of 32.49 million yen or €328,000.

Another record was set with the fish costing roughly 210,000 yen per kilogram.

It was put up for auction on Thursday at the first Tokyo Tsukijji fish market of the year.

President of a sushi restaurant chain Kiyoshi Kimura was the winning bidder who said that he wanted to ‘liven up Japan’.

Kimura believed that this would help the country pull through last year’s traumatic events and dormant economy.
